Over the Garden Wall: Soulful Symphonies series is an addition to Greg’s and Wirt’s adventures through The Unknown. Published by BOOM! Studios in a single issue form and as a collection. I worked on the subtitle logo, single issues and collected edition design.

I am a big fan of Over the Garden Wall Series and I tried to channel my love for it into the design. My goal was to imitate eerie playful atmosphere of this property and fill it with some hints and elements from this story. For the collection back cover I created almost a mirror reflection of the front cover, but the fairy tale one that shows what is actually going on the stage. Even the dark shapes at the front are not simple decoration shapes but are the silhouettes of some characters from the story. These shapes also let me use the rejected logo option (theatre ticket shape) that I transferred into the barcode background.

To reflect the main theme of this series I got inspiration for my design pages from victorian era theatre posters with their ornate frames and faded colors. I drew all of the frames and ornament weaved into them using rough Photoshop brushes to imitate how the real ink might bleed on paper.

Originally I designed a more narrow version of the credits page for the single issues. While adapting this design for collection, I used extra space of a spread to add more elements to lean even more into a poster look, like adding name of the theatre from the story and skull shaped notes. Those are the same notes that were rejected as a part of the logo but worked nicely as text dividers.

Above is an intro spread which also serves as a presentation of all of the characters of this storyline like the ones you might find in a real theatre leaflet.
